December 2007
This world is a broken place
I’m sure of it
but the rest of my life
I shall spend on the mending path
a lost soul soldier
of this human race
keeping pace
with the forces of dark
and destructive hearts
who look out
for just number one
not one love
as I wish everyone would do
how about you?
Will you just sit back
and watch the unraveling
nation vs. nation
father vs. son
some say the worlds ending
but we’ve only begun
I know there’s some goodness
in everyone’s heart
some choose it ignore it
and push us apart
but we all bleed the same blood
we breath the same air
sing the same sad songs
and know it’s not fair
when some of hunger
some throw away food
we turn off CNN
when it sours
our mood.
But the channels don’t matter
who needs a TV
when it doesn’t concern us
what our eyes don’t see.
Some eyes don’t see homelessness
and despair
but beyond the white picket fence
it’s still there.
Mogadishu to Gaza
Port-au-Prince to Baghdad
and hell south of the border,
we think we’ve got it bad?
Tsunamis and famine
malaria, aids
and death and destruction
in the wake of air raids.
This world’s not an Xbox
and war’s not a game
some good people die
on both sides just the same.
Fathers and daughters
mothers and sons
and when it’s all over
just who’s really won?
“Whatsoever you do to
the least of my people”
are the words that we hear
from beneath the steeple
yet some choose to shun those
who differ in kind
for their sake I hope
that their savior is blind.
To kill is to kill and
to steal is to steal
no matter the guise
or the noble appeal.
