“Welcome To Earth” (for Carina Marie, my niece 8/13/2019)

“Welcome To Earth” (for Carina Marie, my niece 8/13/2019)

Never forget that
you come from the stars, you are
more precious than bars
of gold stacked higher than Mars,
more precious than an ocean
brimming with saffron.
Remember, water is life
and you are water,
mostly. Remember you were
born free today and one day
you’ll die free. I hope
you live to be 100
and you live to see
humanity rise above,
hate suffocated by love,
hawk surpassed by dove,
ugliness replaced by such
beauty that you’ll cry
when you look up at the stars
knowing just how far
humanity can progress
in just one lifetime.
I’m sorry this isn’t a
nursery rhyme, it’s the truth.
So, welcome to earth
stardust now in human form
on your day of birth
in the heart of the city
that never sleeps, I hope that
the sheep graze tonight
and your mama and daddy
can turn out the light
and count at least a couple
before the start of day two
and I hope that you
live to see equality
and you get to be
whatever you want to be
and maybe you’ll read this by
twenty twenty-three
or maybe by the time that
you are twenty-three
I just hope by then you see
a better world than today.
Lots of love, your uncle Jay.
