Stitched Into The Flag

Would you shoot your own mother

sister, daughter, or brother

your father or your son

for holding a gun,

or just a cell phone,

or even just for holding space?

Could you pull the trigger so easily

if you had to pause for a moment

and look into their eyes

and acknowledge their face

could you see through

centuries of lies?

could see more than race

before pulling the trigger?

Don’t blame the armed wing of the government

this problem is far bigger

than badges and guns

it runs through the veins of the nation

it’s in our blood

it’s in the mud of Mississippi

but we’re too ignorant to see

that it’s in every state of the union

and it’s stitched into the flag

it’s in the fine print on the body bags

and the price tags of endless war

it’s on the other side of a locked door

it’s in the criminalization of the poor

and the name tags worn behind bars

and it’s in police cars following kids home from school

and in metal detectors they have to walk through

and in VA Home loans from World War Two

and in redlining and confining

and in redefining slavery as migration

and it’s been 150 years

since the emancipation proclamation

but the government still murders

innocent black people

with impunity

but we’re still more concerned about a barbaric sport

that leaves people with traumatic brain injuries

and busted backs and knees

than we are about unity

and I would happily take a bullet for Kaepernick

but I hope he takes this overseas

where Muhammad Ali

and Dr. King took it

because we can’t look at America

and ignore places like Afghanistan

and so on…

what King said about the connection

between the war in Vietnam

and the poverty and oppression in the states

holds true for all of these countries

as long as innocent blood drops

in places like Iraq

and Afghanistan

the state will never stop

murdering innocent black people

and doing all it can

to keep everyone divided

and if you still haven’t decided

that the truth is on Kaepernick’s side

there are literally dozens

if not hundreds

of clear-as-day videos

of police murdering unarmed black people

that will quickly prove you otherwise

for fucks sake, open your eyes

whether you like it or not

and in the time that it took me to write this

another young, unarmed black person

was shot

and you bought the bullets

and you pay the salary of the murderer

and you pay for the kangaroo court

that will, against all evidence

find that murderer innocent.

You paid for the needle

and for the thread.
