Certain Days

On certain days, blind patriotism is quite alright

an over-the-top display of nationalism is perfectly fine

a couple times a year, hawks can proudly soar above eagles,

(no room in the sky for doves)

and all jingoists can come out

from the depths of their congressional offices

and wave the same flags at passersby

that they wave behind their desks

every other day of the year

as they work to instill fear in the people

and work to instill happiness in defense contractors

yes, on certain days,

as the marching band plays patriotic songs

like Yankee Doodle Dandy, and so on

it’s quite alright to forget

about all the wicked things we’re doing and we’ve done

as long as you know they lyrics and can sing along,

“Johnny, get your gun, get your gun, get your gun…”

but pomp and circumstance certainly isn’t for everyone,

so, maybe skip the parade and relax in the sun

and watch a famous hot dog eating contest

among the most American ways to celebrate conquest

and look at all the American flags

on those hats and towels and coolers and beach umbrellas

and on those bikini-clad chests and board shorts

and on fancier attire at the country club golf course and tennis courts

and nothing says freedom like fireworks and beer

so, buy some Chinese made American flag swag

and cheer the day

that slave owners and Indian killers got to say

“We are rich white men, God dammit,

you cannot treat us this way…

because today is independence day!”

Yeah, today is one of those certain days

when everyone prays

the fireworks will be better than last year

and fuck self-control,

let’s shotgun these beers

and cheer on America with our peers

and forget about yesterdays alligator tears

those caged brown kids can wait a day…

no time to be sad, there are horse shoes to throw

and bocce ball to play

there are troops to thank

and slogans to say

there are anthems to sing

and taxes to pay…

and no, I don’t support the war

and no, I don’t support ICE

and no, I don’t support the ‘Muslim ban’

and heck, I voted for Jill Stein twice!

But…today’s about freedom

about fireworks

and beer

so shut up and let me be a nationalist today

we only get these certain days

a handful of times a year.
